Hallsville Settles for Fifth-Place Game
Playing in Auxvasse, Hallsville split its first two games in the Fulton Tournament. The Indians lost the opener to Mexico 2-1 when Ryan Hollenberg scored on a throwing error by Hallsville pitcher Austin Church. Hollenberg had been hit by a Church pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
- Sharks 2, Red Wings 1: In San Jose, Calif., the Sharks shuffled their lines and upped their intensity midway through the game, yet they owed their Game 3 comeback against the Detroit Red Wings to one constant factor in this postseason. No matter the opponent or the situation, Joe Thornton has erased his reputation as a playoff underachiever.

Looks Are Deceiving On Links ; Hickman Golfer Frustrated Despite Advancing to State.
NEW BLOOMFIELD - Chris Johnson wore a discouraged look as he walked off the 18th green yesterday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club. Anyone who saw it would have had a difficult time believing the Hickman senior had just tied for second place in the Class 4 District 5 Tournament. In that moment, the frustration of at least four would-be birdie putts that caught some piece of the cup but did not drop and the feeling that he hadn't done enough to contribute to his team's quest for a fifth consec...
- Cavaliers 97, Wizards 90: Down by three points with 51/2 minutes left in Game 4, the Cleveland Cavaliers needed someone to put the Washington Wizards away. Time to turn to LeBron James, right? Not exactly.

Borgia Bests Hickman Soccer ; Kewpies Can't Take Advantage of Opportunities.
In a season that has become exceedingly rough for the Hickman girls soccer team, last night's loss was especially hard to swallow. Despite thoroughly dominating possession and continually forcing the play offensively, the Kewpies squandered their chances while St. Francis Borgia made the most of the only two it got in a 2-1 win at Hickman Field.

Pc Info ; Tackling Memory Troubles
Memory can be a tricky thing, especially if you're a computer. It's not always how much you have, but how well you use it. This week's topic was sparked by a rather urgent e-mail I received from a reader. The reader has a computer that has been acting slow for some time and recently displayed warning messages that the system is running "dangerously low on resources." The kicker came when normally reliable applications began shutting down with "illegal operations" errors. What gives?
Administration Scapegoats Critics ; with Bush Crowd, Watch Your Back.
In the game of dodgeball, you try to avoid being hit from the front. But you don't expect to be hit from behind. The longer we live with the Bush administration, the bigger the pile of bodies on the sidelines, stunned by the hit from its own team.

The Fire Inside ; Personal Turmoil has Fueled Mayweather's Fury.
LAS VEGAS - Floyd Mayweather Jr. stood toe-to-toe with Sugar Ray Leonard. Twenty years ago and in a boxing ring, this would have been one of the greatest matches in boxing history. But on this night two years ago at the annual boxing writers' dinner in Las Vegas with the two men dressed in suits, it was merely a war of words. Mayweather was explaining to Leonard how and why he would have beaten Leonard if they had ever met, how it was a battle Leonard would lose when Mayweather landed a vicio...

City Draws Up $450 Million Wish List
As Columbia grows, the city has more need for roads and other public construction projects than it has money to pay for them, City Manager Bill Watkins said. The comments came this morning as Watkins unveiled the city's draft 2008 capital improvement program, an annual planning document detailing infrastructure needs and wants over the next decade.

State of the Boone County Economy ; Commercial Interruption
Boone County long has been thought of as having a Teflon economy. As the markets on Wall Street ebb and flow, and as the state's economy dipped after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Boone County seemed protected. The area's roots in higher education, insurance and medical care seemed to insulate it from outside pressure. But some watchers believe times are changing. Columbia's economy is slipping, at least a bit, when it comes to economic indicators, they say. Others say it continues t...

Missing Jewelry Is Kid's Stuff ; Responsibility Shared in Mixup.
A fellow teacher at my elementary school sells jewelry. A student came to deliver $80 worth of merchandise to a woman with whom I share a classroom. She was not in, so I said he could leave the package on her chair. The next day she inquired about her jewelry: She never received it. Someone stole it from our classroom. Who is responsible for the $80? - Name withheld, Connecticut
