For brothers Chad, 25, Erin, 21, and Kiffer Slate, 19, their deconstructive love for cars has been a lifelong memory. "When I was 5 years old, I got my first tool kit. That's when I started taking things apart," Kiffer says.
`He Restored the Roar` ; Ex-Mu Coach Larry Smith Dies of Cancer at 68.
Back in October, former Missouri football Coach Larry Smith and his wife Cheryl had dinner with former Missouri player David Rowe, a defensive lineman whose playing career was known more for his inspiring survival of cancer than for any play he made on the field. Sitting down for dinner at Rowe's Columbia restaurant, D. Rowe's, player and coach talked about their bouts with cancer.
Catherine Asbridge, 94, of Columbia died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008. Services will be held at a later date.
A Prime-Time Juggernaut ; Creativity Helped Make Super Bowl More Than a Game.
PHOENIX - Given the orgy of excess that accompanies the Super Bowl today, it seems impossible to believe that more than 30 years ago, the NFL's championship game was a television lead-in to golf. During Super Bowl V in 1971, NBC encouraged viewers to remain tuned in for coverage of the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am. Five years later, the final round of the Phoenix Open followed CBS' broadcast of Super Bowl X.
Janina Ostrowski, 89, of Columbia passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, at Golden Living Center of Jefferson City. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Our Lady of Lourdes, with burial in Doylestown, Pa. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.
By Any Name, Smith Was the Real Deal
To Larry Smith, I was always Joel. I had good company in being mildly misidentified. During a puzzling quarterback battle during the spring of 1999, Kirk Farmer was usually Kurt and Kurt Propst was usually Kirk, making it virtually impossible to determine who might end up the starter. When he drew a complete blank, Smith would refer to a player as "the kid from Illinois" or some such. Nobody seemed to mind. That was just Larry.
M. Elaine Donovan Langford, 90, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2008, in Columbia. A memorial service was held Monday, Jan. 28, at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Columbia. Inurnment will be at St. John's Cathedral All Souls Walk in Denver at a later date.

Yvonne Anderson scored 22 points as the second-seeded Hickman girls basketball team defeated Lutheran South 54-24 in the opening round of the Fischer's Pro-Line Tournament at Webster Groves. The Kewpies (15-5), ranked seventh in Class 5, used a 24-point second quarter to build a 35-12 halftime advantage over the Class 4 Lancers (4-15)
On the surface of the situation, the Mitchell Report seems to confirm the theory that Roger Clemens turned his career around with the use of illegal, performance-enhancing drugs. Randy Hendricks, Clemens' longtime agent, attempted to refute that theory, in the latest defense salvo from the Clemens camp.
Allison E. Davis, 83, of Prairie Home died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008. Memorial services are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Markland- Yager Funeral Home in New Franklin. Visitation is one hour before the service.
Second Rider Killed in Motorcycle Crash
A second Columbia motorcyclist has died after an accident on Rock Quarry Road in south Columbia. Columbia police said 22-year-old Mark E. Kompass of 1217 Juniper Drive was driving a 2006 Buell motorcycle northbound at 11:39 a.m. yesterday on Rock Quarry Road near Telluride Lane when he lost control, struck a curb and drove off the right side of the roadway.
Hornets Learn From Close Games ; Fulton Hangs On to Beat Host Eagles.
ASHLAND - The final minutes of the Fulton girls basketball game against Southern Boone seemed all too familiar for the Hornets. This season, Fulton squandered late leads against Hallsville and Helias and couldn't come back. As the Eagles' Naomi Starr and Marina McKee combined to sink five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter of yesterday's game, a repeat performance appeared all the more plausible.
Columbia Checks Out On Defense ; Strong Second Half Leads Eagles to Win.
FAYETTE - Up until last week, the Columbia College men's basketball team was cruising through this season like a middle-aged man in a brand-new Porsche. After the past three games, the Cougars might be in the market to turn in the Porsche for a Jeep. This team needs a set of wheels that can take it through the rough spots.
Temple Announces He Will Turn Pro
Tony Temple knows how to make an exit. The Missouri tailback's record-breaking day at the Cotton Bowl will stand as his final game in a Missouri uniform as the school announced today that Temple has chosen to drop his appeal to the NCAA for a fifth year of eligibility. Instead, he'll turn his attention to the upcoming NFL draft.
On Ethics ; Reward Can Level the Field
I teach at a state university that offers financial incentives to hire minority candidates. A department receives $1,000 for completing a tenure-track hire but $5,000 if it hires a minority candidate. I'm concerned that colleagues will make recommendations based on the financial reward rather than pursue the "best" candidate. Should the institution offer these bounties? -Mark Chase, Slippery Rock, Pa.

Pc Info ; Keytext Saves Time at Your Keyboard
Despite having faster computers and smarter applications, user input remains the weakest link in the productivity chain. There always will be difficult or repetitive typing tasks, but wouldn't it be nice if your computer could just read your mind? That's almost what it's like to use macros. Defined simply, macros are a series of program commands, keyboard input or mouse actions that are recorded, then later performed automatically when triggered by a user-defined keystroke or mouse input comb...
