Summary


The Missouri Attorney General's Office has confirmed city attorney Fred Boeckmann's opinion that the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission's method of electing officers through a secret ballot does not comply with state open records laws.

The commission's method of electing officers without publicly disclosing the names of the commissioners who cast ballots was called into question in June when former commissioner David Brodsky was elected chairman of the commission. Community Development Director Tim Teddy told the commission before the vote that Boeckmann had advised him that to be in compliance with the Missouri Open Meetings and Records Law, each commissioner's vote would need to be recorded.
