Abuse Victims Speak Out After Penn State

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: I have worked with SNAP for almost nine years. After hearing hundreds of horrific stories of kids who were sexually abused, I learned something new a couple of weeks ago from a newly forthcoming victim. She said the reason she finally decided to speak up and seek help was because of all the news about the Penn State sex abuse. She told me the news and the graphic grand jury report helped to remove the "taboo" of speaking about having been sexually abused as a child.

This subject does need to be talked about much more, and victims should be treated with respect and are to be applauded. Yes, child sex abuse has been going on forever; but it is now being exposed, and silence is not an option. Witnesses, whistle-blowers, those who suspect abuse and those who have been abused need to speak up and contact police; do not report to the institutions. Pick up the phone and dial 911, no matter how long ago the abuse took place.
