The Third Age ; Older Workers Still Have Plenty to Contribute

Early retirement isn't all it's cracked up to be for a great many folks around the world. A new report, the largest of its kind, was recently released by a banking group in the United Kingdom. Titled the "Future of Retirement," the study, conducted by the Oxford University Institute of Aging, questioned 21,000 people in 21 countries about early retirement. They found that in the United States, 19 percent of those 70 years old were still in paid employment, despite the popularity of early retirement.

The concept of early retirement was introduced by employers in the '70s and '80s because they were worried about the large number of unemployed younger people. Moving the older folks out of the marketplace seemed the answer. As well, they thought that the newer staff would cost the company less because they could pay them on a reduced schedule and they would be more compliant.
