Open Column ; in the Final Analysis, Palestinians Define Israel

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: In a July 20 Tribune article, Rabbi Yossi Feintuch, in referring to the Israeli incursion into Lebanon, was quoted as saying, "This war is not about territory." What a whopper. Establishing the state of Israel inconvenienced a lot of folks who were already living there and who by and large were "encouraged" to leave - by legal manipulation and/or by forceful means. But that is all "water over the dam," and the Palestinians were put on a reservation just like our American Indians so that they could live in peace. Their reservation turned out to be little more than a prison yard where any "malcontents" could be culled by helicopter gunships, missiles, tanks or bulldozers.

Also, their reservation has been shrinking in the past few decades: Jewish settlers have moved in, and no one expects them to leave. A TV program told of Jewish "settlers" turning off the water (permanently) to what looked like a small Arab apartment building. Mike Wallace, of "60 Minutes" fame, who is Jewish, covered the original occupation of the West Bank. He quoted an Israeli general then as saying they were "here to stay." So, Yossi, what do you want to do with those troublesome Palestinians? Israel must understand that its future depends on its treatment of the Palestinians.
