Summary


Editor, the Tribune: One has to admire the candor with which Wayne Anderson describes the innocent way he set out on his world travels in the Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 issues of the Tribune. Many would prepare themselves by studying language and reading up on the history and culture of the people to be visited. Anderson is happy to go out and see the world in terms of ready-made stereotypes about Germans, British, Italians, Thais, Indians, etc.

As an Asian specialist, I feel the need to correct two errors. I flinched at his calling the Thais "patriarchal" when the most distinctive feature of Thai social life is the gender equality, even in farm villages.
