The round opening fits over the saddle horn, or it could have been hung on a strap on the saddle. Cowboys found it handy for mending fences as they "rode the line" in the vast pastures where their cattle grazed. Besides the hammerhead, it has a pick and a wire twister, all in one compact tool.
