Granny Smith, move over! There are other sweet and tart contenders for the great American apple pie - or at least the great Midwestern apple pie. Granny, make way for Jonathan, Gala, Liberty, Cortland, Jonagold, York, Rome and Golden Delicious. And that's just the tip of the bushel.

Missouri apples have been both plentiful and flavorful this season. Last week, even as the season was winding down, more than a half-dozen varieties were sold at the Columbia Farmers Market. Granny made a fleeting appearance while late bloomers like Arkansas Black and Blushing Golden debuted.
