JEFFERSON CITY -- After a hard-fought compromise, the state Senate today approved an economic development bill designed to increase jobs in the face of the state's troubled economy.

As lawmakers approached their 6 p.m. session adjournment today, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 26-8 to send the jobs bill to the House, which had approved its own version months ago. Gov. Jay Nixon and House Speaker Ron Richard, R-Joplin, had made the legislation their top priority of the session.
