MOUNT ZION CHURCH -- A force of 470 Federal troops clashed with a rebel force of as many as 900 in a fierce three-hour fight that scarred headstones and killed more than two dozen men.

Brig. Gen. Benjamin Prentiss had set out at 2 a.m. with a mixed force of cavalry and sharpshooters, intending to attack the rebel column discovered the previous day. The horsemen, from the 3rd Missouri Cavalry, were commanded by Col. John Glover, and the riflemen, from Birge's Western Sharpshooters, were commanded by Col. John Birge.
