It was a decision that shouldn't have changed Art Gelder's life. It was just after 8 a.m. on Dec. 18, 1975. Art had just come home after grabbing a cup of coffee with his friends, and he was faced with the daunting task tending to chores on his Kamrar, Iowa, farm about 40 miles north of Ames. He trudged out to the barn, the 5 degrees-below weather putting a chill as he went to the water tank.

It wasn't new, it didn't catch the lifelong farmer off guard and it shouldn't have taken more than a few minutes to fix. Art grabbed his tank heater, poured some oil into it and lit the fire. And in an instant, he lost the life he knew.

"For some reason, the 5 gallon can of fuel oil exploded," Art said. "It blew up, sprayed the rest of the oil on me."
