Big East Football Is Back

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - There have probably been more meaningful games in the Big East - the Miami-Virginia Tech games in 1998 and 2000 come to mind - but tonight's showdown between third-ranked West Virginia (7-0) and fifth-ranked Louisville (7-0) will go down as the game that saved Big East football, giving it much-needed credibility the year after Boston College joined Miami and Virginia Tech in bolting for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The winner of this game will most likely have the inside track for a spot in the Jan. 8 BCS title game in Glendale, Ariz., opposite the winner of the Ohio State-Michigan Big Ten showdown Nov. 18 in Columbus, Ohio. And, if tonight's winner finishes 12-0, it deserves to be there ahead of any one-loss team from the Southeastern Conference, Big 12 or Pac-10, despite what the national pundits might suggest in the ensuing weeks.
