Boil 'Orders' ; the 'Capital of the World'

Summary


Among the funniest images to appear on our editorial page of late was Darkow's on Wednesday showing a huge billboard on Interstate 70 West reading "Columbia. Boil Order Capital of the World. Next 6 Exits."

Our cartoonist was reacting to a recent spate of drinking water boil advisories issued by the city to guard against potential health hazards from leaking water lines. When lines break and water pressure is lowered, contamination is more likely to run backward into consumer water supplies. Missouri Department of Natural Resources rules require water system operators, such as the city, to notify users in affected areas any time the pressure falls below 20 pounds per square inch.
