Summary


With the arrival of summer, Boomerang Creek is at once bathed in dazzling light and shrouded in shade. A walk in any direction leads to any number of distractions and little dramas. My goal might be the meadow, but I stop along the way, stunned that an array of pastel hydrangeas thriving in partial shade are as vibrant today as when they bloomed a month ago. Can such beauty last forever?

When a middling-size box turtle lumbers across the yard in my direction, I am reminded of one of nature's compelling summer dramas. It is the ancient, internal-clock-driven urge of turtles - from box to snapper - to migrate in an unwaveringly straight line no matter what lies in their path, be it a superhighway or an old stone wall.
