Bus Changes Draw Critics to Council Hearing

About 20 residents spoke out last night in opposition to proposed budget cuts and fare increases for the city's bus system.

In an effort to bring some financial stability to Columbia Transit, City Manager Mike Matthes has proposed service reductions and fare increases. Proposed fare increases would raise rates to $1.50 for regular riders, $3 for Paratransit riders and $100 for semester-long bus passes for students. Matthes also has proposed to eliminate discounts for Medicaid recipients, low-income riders, students and riders younger than 5.
