Summary


Max Jaben began swimming competitively as a 4-year-old, and by elementary school, he already showed signs of his enormous athletic potential.

"Our gym teacher said, `He's going to be in the Olympics one day,' " recalled Jeff Wolfert, the Missouri placekicker who grew up a few blocks from Jaben in Overland Park, Kan., and is currently the caretaker of Jaben's home in Columbia.

What that gym teacher couldn't have guessed was that this Kansas City kid will take his Olympic plunge wearing a swim cap with the Star of David, not the Stars and Stripes. And who could have known that the guy who was so burned out on swimming in the fall of 2006 that he only got wet in the shower would be so consumed with the idea of swimming in the Olympics that he would move halfway around the world less than a year later?
