Open Column ; Founders Based America On Their Biblical Principles

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: The Dec. 12 editorial was an exquisite articulation of the anti-religious attitude in America shared by many. And you are all wrong. Everyone has a religion or faith in something. Their actions are a manifestation of those beliefs. When Godly principles are suppressed in favor of individual standards, we get some fascists, as demonstrated in the last century.

The United States' founders constructed their lives on biblical principles, and they wrote the Constitution to restrain government from certain actions - like "prohibiting the free exercise thereof" religion in the First Amendment. James Madison said, "religion is the basis and foundation of government." The religious beliefs of the Founders are based on serving others. Loving one's neighbor cannot be legislated; therefore, caring for others was intentionally omitted from the Constitution. Those actions are left to the people. The nonreligious politicians want to take these obligations from the people, remake them to their standards and take credit for any benefit. This robs everyone of their fundamental obligation.
