Open Column ; City's `Green' Efforts Hindered by Red Light

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: As our city struggles to become "green," perhaps it's time to look at some simple and inexpensive ways to help save the planet.

Let's start with the traffic light at the bottom of Providence hill by Reactor Field. This traffic signal has been here for a year or so now. It might be quite effective during the few home football games, but is a daily menace to drivers on Providence Road. The speed limit is 50 mph heading downhill, but one car entering the intersection from Reactor Field triggers the light, forcing 50 cars on Providence Road to wear out their brake pads to stop. From the skid marks on the pavement, you can also assume that many cars are wearing out their tires as well. The light changes, and 50 cars have to burn more gas to get back up the hill again. Imagine how much pollution this situation creates as it happens 100 times a day, every day.
