Summary

Editor, the Tribune: I just wanted to let you know that, contrary to the lead paragraph of Thursday's "The Tribune's View," the University of Missouri has not resided solely in Columbia since 1870. That was when the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy was established in Rolla. It was a school of the University of Missouri, just as the schools of journalism, agriculture and medicine were and are. The only difference was that this school was located some 100 miles to the south of the main campus. When the University of Missouri became a system, then the "school" in Rolla became a university in its own right: the University of Missouri at Rolla, later renamed the University of Missouri-Rolla. As you know, in January UMR will become Missouri University of Science and Technology.
