Editor, the Tribune: What kind of war are we fighting? Is it military, civil, political, economic, religious, cultural or all of the above? Our troops are fighting an unconventional war of attrition against tactically inventive, suicidal guerillas. As a boy I learned never to fight someone unafraid of being hurt. The daily toll of civilian and military personnel killed and injured keeps adding to the bloody carnage.

Iraq has large oil deposits. Are we laying claim to its resources? Who has a dog in this fight: Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Turkey, Israel, Palestine, Russia, Kurdistan, North Korea and China? Who do we oppose, and who do we cultivate? Shiite, Sunni, Christian, Muslim, Arab, Hebrew - why are we caught in the middle of these centuries-old religious battles?
