Editor, the Tribune: Your front-page article about livening up city "gateways" instantly brought to mind my first impressions when coming in and out of Columbia. My work has me traveling extensively throughout the central United States, and my first impressions are always about the ease and safety of roads in and out of cities and towns. Traffic congestion and road safety top my impression list. Beautification is great during the day, but if you can't see what street you're on or the lane you're driving in at night or during a rainstorm, a traffic accident is the impression with which you're left.

Beautification should start with bright lane paint and superior street signs. Columbia is a great place to visit; make getting around as easy as possible.
