Summary
There are a number of "red-letter days" in each of our lives. Some that come to mind are our weddings, the birth of a child, graduation, etc. One such day is coming up for our second-grader. This Sunday, he celebrates his first Communion. After months of preparation and studying, he is ready for one of the milestones in his life. I'm sure that he has deeply contemplated the religious and spiritual implications of this solemn sacrament and that he is ready to proceed with the next step to follow his faith. I'm also sure that he has come to the full realization of what else comes along with the sacramental celebration - the party afterward, where all of the relatives arrive bearing gifts!
Now, I'm not being sacrilegious here - it's just that there is only so much religious mystery that an 8-year-old can wrap his mind around. He is, in some ways, awestruck at the significance of the event but also mystified by the intangibility of the notion of pure faith. On the other hand, he is quite confident that at the end of the day, he will make out like a bandit with gifts, both religious and secular.See the full content of this document
