Summary


Growing up without an older sibling, I missed out on a major advantage many of my friends had in being exposed to some of the best music of the late '70s and early '80s.

While worn-out, lo-fi tapes of the likes of recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee R.E.M. and the Replacements - then the new heroes of a budding, obscure genre called "college radio" - were being handed down their way, I was throwing Billy Joel's "My Life"/ "52nd Street" 45 and the REO Speedwagon LP "Hi Infidelity" on the turntable.
