Editor, the Tribune: Fred Faurot's July 25 letter to the Open Column, wherein he maligned retired Judge Ellen Roper's judicial performance and questioned her knowledge of jurisprudence, failed to point out his own knowledge of the law derives in no small way from at least five appearances as a defendant in the 13th Circuit Court.

In the late '70s, I worked as a clerk for Judge Roper in both the probate and juvenile courts in Boone County. Her legal acumen and her integrity then, as now, are beyond cavil. To accomplish anything noteworthy in any field is inevitably to draw unwarranted criticism from the less-aptly enabled, even from repeat offenders of the public weal.
