As I write, temperatures have soared to triple digits, fishing has slowed and my dogs give me the "What the heck are you doing?" look whenever we go out to train. Thank God for a backyard pond to keep them cool as we work toward Missouri's first upland bird season opening Sept. 1.

Dove season is a few weeks away. It's time to start searching for dove concentrations and permission to hunt what arguably is Missouri's most popular upland game bird.
