Just when you think the presidential election process can't be screwed up any more than it already is, along comes a boneheaded wrinkle to make it worse.

This time it's the decision of the Republican Party in South Carolina to push forward its 2008 primary from Feb. 2 to Jan. 19. The move is certain to trigger similar actions in Iowa and New Hampshire to preserve those states' positions as the kickoff venues for selection of national convention delegates.
