Open Column ; Election System Is Sound; Repeat Offenses Frustrating

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: While disappointed in many of the election results, I am very pleased that the election process still works in removing public officials who violate the public trust. Sen. Chuck Graham truly falls into this category, and I am glad our citizens recognized this and sent a message through their voting that character does matter. Our election system is still on solid ground when it allows for any candidate to have his or her qualifications reviewed by the voters, and then let the voters speak on whom they want to represent them.

I am frustrated over the crime in Columbia when I read that Grady F. Dortch Jr. has been arrested 16 times previous to his first- degree murder confession. I feel sorry for our police, who have to keep arresting many of the same criminals over and over again. Our justice system needs a major overhaul when these criminals are allowed to run the streets. He should have been locked up long ago, and Miles Heard would still be alive. Now, our justice system will spend thousands of taxpayer dollars to prosecute this killer who has confessed to the crime. He should have been in prison long ago.
