With gas prices in Missouri in the $4-a-gallon range in an election year, ethanol has gained renewed prominence.

Under a law that became effective in January, gasoline sold in the state must have at least 10 percent of the corn-derived fuel additive whenever ethanol is not more expensive than gasoline. That requirement continues to be supported by Gov. Matt Blunt, U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia, and Attorney General Jay Nixon but has drawn criticism from state Treasurer Sarah Steelman.
