Even with Ethanol, We Have More Than Enough for Food

Summary


Editor, the Tribune: Ethanol does not pit food against fuel. In the United States, there is little shortage of anything we need to sustain ourselves. But we are short on humility, which drives our wants. We want more than enough.

We want more to the extent that we have made ourselves obese and sick. We eat too much and throw the rest away and blame ethanol and corn for our excess. We claim ethanol is unwisely turning jungle and grasslands to crop production, yet we buy the most productive cropland in the name of economic development.
