When Rick McGuire arrived at Missouri as the women's track coach in 1983, he knew little about the school's athletic tradition. He got his first lesson from Don Faurot.

At the time, the offices of all the coaches were along the same Hearnes Center hallway, with a big office for basketball Coach Norm Stewart on one end and a big office for football Coach Warren Powers on the other. McGuire moved into a small office in the middle. Across the hall was an even tinier room, with the names Faurot, Botts and Simmons on the door. McGuire assumed they must be graduate assistants if they had to share a space that small.
