Wednesday was midsummer's eve - the longest day of the year, followed by the shortest night. From now through Dec. 21, each day will have slightly less daylight than the one that preceded it, with night getting the extra moments. Also called the summer solstice, it marks the first day of summer on the Gregorian calendar hanging in your kitchen, though we know summer has been since May 1. It really is midsummer.
