Garden talking can take you to unexpected places, and last week I found myself standing at the edge of conversation about growing tobacco.

My friend had heard that all tobacco grown these days is genetically altered and wondered whether I knew if that was true. There is evidence of the engineering at a genetic level to produce both nicotine-rich and reduced-nicotine tobacco. Today, most bioengineering research on tobacco is intent on using the plant for a host of pharmaceutical applications, including cures for certain kinds of cancer.
