Summary


Missourians live in a more or less constant state of irritation over the way our politicians handle the state budget, but lest we work up too much angst, we need only glance at our neighbor to the east.

Illinois has joined California, as described by The New York Times, "as a symbol of the fiscal collapse of states during the recession ... as its dysfunctional political class refuses to pay the state's bills and refuses to take the painful steps -- cuts and tax increases -- to close a deficit of at least $12 billion, equal to nearly half the state's budget."
