Columbia's birders look forward to a pair of major bird counts each year. The turnout for each is the largest in the state. The coordinator for the pair is the matriarch of the birding community - Susan Hazelwood.

At the Christmas bird count held the third Saturday in December, Susan sends an army of 90 birding enthusiasts of varying abilities into eight zones within a count circle with a diameter of 15 miles.
