Summary


Back when I was in grade school, almost nothing cool had been invented. There were no X-Boxes, Gameboys or iPods. We had television but only got three channels, and after school every day, they all simultaneously showed reruns of Gilligan's Island. There were no cell phones, and we wouldn't have been allowed to use them even if there had been. Soccer technically existed, but American kids were still savvy enough to realize it was a waste of time. In other words, there was absolutely nothing worthwhile for a 10-year- old boy to do.

That's why Cub Scouts was so popular. Everybody was in Cub Scouts back in those days, even a kid like me who had the same general affinity for being a junior outdoorsman as I did for, say, building a nuclear submarine.
