Florists and restaurants will be especially busy this weekend as mothers are honored with special gifts and meals. My remembrance of Mother's Day as a child is the red Paul Scarlet rose or a pretty pink peony bud from our flower garden. My sister, brother and I each wore a flower to church on Sunday morning. Mother would wear a white blossom to signify that her own mother was no longer living.

Flowers and gifts are special, and the phone companies report more calls are made on this day than any other. Not only are mothers special to many of us, but so are many female relatives and friends who provide guidance to us, even as adults. It is a good time to tell those people how special they are. I also like to remember first-time moms. It is only the beginning for these women.
