If It's Thanksgiving, It's Time for Christmas Cacti

Floating somewhere in the pools of horticultural trivia in my head was that little piece of information that all plants of the genus Schlumbergera get lumped together and called Christmas cacti. And although some of them, specifically the S. x buckleyi hybrids, truly bloom during Yuletide, the S. truncata cultivar begins to show its blooms closer to Turkeytime.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Thanksgiving cactus. In fact, most of the blooming holiday cacti popularly sold as Christmas cacti are S. truncata, or crab cacti, so-called because the plants' stem segments feature little points along their edges. That's how you can tell the Thanksgiving cacti from their Christmas cousins because true December holiday cactus hybrids generally have smooth-edged segments.
