Lack of Math Standard Hurts Instruction, Study Says

Elementary students in Missouri aren't learning mathematics in the same sequence that students in other states are, and the disparity might have negative side effects, according to a University of Missouri-Columbia study released last week.

Because individual states are allowed to establish their own math curriculum, national assessments that determine proficiency are essentially "meaningless," researcher Barbara Reys, an MU math professor, said. "The variation in learning expectations across states makes comparisons across state lines impossible," she said. In other countries, learning expectations are set at a national level, she noted.
