Summary
On the morrow, my longtime friend Pat arrives for a visit. In the summer of 1974, the two of us, joined by my sister Kim, left our teaching jobs and one too many harsh Nebraska winters behind us and set out on an odyssey to Southern California. Moving in a caravan of two cars and a 24-foot U-Haul truck packed to the gills with our combined possessions, we set our compass on a westward course across mountains and deserts, then plunged headlong into a maze of merging and exiting lanes of L.A. rush-hour freeway traffic, doggedly staying our course until finally we reached the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
Pat put down permanent roots in Southern California's sun-kissed soil, and after a decade, I set out on other odysseys with Kit, my partner in travel and life. These eventually led us back to the Midwest, where we've since put down deep roots of our own.
