Summary
On March 21, 1864, in Mexico, Mo., David and Walker Lillard, brothers and slaves, enlisted in the Union Army, which promised freedom and regular pay to blacks willing to join the fight to preserve the nation and end slavery.
When they returned from the war in 1866, the brothers started families and helped found Second Missionary Baptist Church in their hometown. They were buried in unmarked graves in Elmwood Cemetery.See the full content of this document
