As the Columbia City Council prepares to vote Monday night on a proposal to raise parking meter rates to help pay for two parking garages, tickets for parking meter violations are being issued at an increasing rate and the amount of money the city pulls in from parking meters has been growing.
According to numbers released by the city's Public Works Department, the total number of tickets issued for expired meters in 2008 was more than 50,000, and that number fell to 41,521 in the following year. But in 2010, the yellow envelope famous for carrying a parking ticket became visible under more windshield wiper blades - - the annual total jumped back up to 47,930.See the full content of this document
