JEFFERSON CITY -- Gov. Jay Nixon yesterday signed a bill that trades a shorter period of initial unemployment benefits for immediate reinstatement of payments to the long-term jobless.

The bill restores benefits that ended April 2 as a result of a Senate filibuster of the measure. The first checks could go out this week, Nixon said.
