Odor from a roof replacement project was apparently mistaken for natural gas yesterday morning when middle school and high school students in Hallsville were dismissed early as a safety precaution.

Hallsville Superintendent of Schools John Robertson said students were evacuated and sent home at 9:50 a.m. Robertson said crews from AmerenUE, which supplies the schools with natural gas, checked out the odor and attributed the noxious smell to asphalt and other materials used in the roofing project.
