Open Column ; Lawson Is Right Choice for Ninth District

Summary

Editor, the Tribune: I believe Ewell Lawson would be a strong Ninth District representative in the Missouri House. He strikes a balance between youthful enthusiasm and deep experience, having worked under Govs. Mel Carnahan and Roger Wilson, as well as for Auditor Claire McCaskill. I've seen firsthand how freshman legislators struggle to adapt to the workings of state politics. Term limits have left a leadership vacuum in Jefferson City. I believe Lawson's experience will allow him to hit the ground running and fill that void. That would be good for Howard County, northern Columbia, Boone County and the rest of the district.

I've met Lawson several times and seen him at a number of events. I'm impressed by the amount of time he has spent in my hometown of Fayette. And he's not always here just to campaign or make speeches, as you can often spot him sitting in the back of the room listening thoughtfully to what others have to say. He's approachable, open to new ideas and willing to listen. These traits, combined with his experience, make him a rare candidate. I like his stand on affordable health care and the economic development of rural areas, two issues critical to Boone and Howard counties.
