Summary
Memorial Day signals the beginning of picnic season. I always remember the wicker picnic basket coming out to carry the dinner to Mount Olive Church outside Marionville on that fourth Sunday of May. Everyone brought a basket of food that was laid out on farm wagons for dinner. The first order of business was to decorate family graves with fresh-cut flowers from gardens that were blooming with roses and honeysuckle.
Our wicker basket had been a wedding gift for my parents in 1941, before Styrofoam and plastic coolers. I am sure mother's had originally been outfitted with plates and cutlery, but I only remember the five heavy, red plastic divided plates and five plastic tumblers that stayed stored in the basket after each use. Wicker carryalls have been used since the 1700s, and when the automobile was new, some cars came equipped with these well-stocked baskets, complete with a picnic blanket.See the full content of this document
