JEFFERSON CITY -- A plan to replace the state income tax with a higher sales tax on more goods and services ran into strong opposition today when the idea came up for consideration in a state Senate committee.

Business groups such as the Missouri Retailers Association and the Missouri Association of Realtors joined charitable organizations such as Catholic Charities of Missouri and the Partnership for Children in Kansas City in coming out against the proposed constitutional amendment.
