Summary
Like a game of musical chairs, the coming school board election will leave out one person. The Columbia Board of Education has two openings sought by three candidates. Patrons of the district should be pleased at the quality of the field, but two of the three earn an endorsement here.
Incumbent Karla DeSpain has a track record, both an advantage and disadvantage. She can fairly be praised or criticized as the status quo candidate. Her greatest attributes are experience on the board and good insight into current operations. The status quo in this district is not bad. Her greatest demerit is her occasional unwillingness to question and criticize, a disease plaguing most sitting members who succumb to the traditionally closed style of school operations, led on by persuasive appeals for unambiguous support from credible administrators.See the full content of this document
