1 The soybean has many culinary uses and forms, including oil and flour. It is often used as a substitute for many food items such as dairy, meat and wheat products because it contains no gluten. But it also has industrial uses, such as in resins, fibers and plastics, many of which were discovered in the 1930s under the promotion of Henry Ford, who sought to develop the soybean both as a food and industrial product.

2 Part of the legume family, soybeans, which can be black, yellow or green, have been a staple protein in Asian cuisine for more than 5,000 years but were only introduced to Western cultivation in the 1900s.
