Carla and I spent Thanksgiving with our daughter, Debra, and her husband, Steve, in Kansas City and stayed around a couple of days to immerse ourselves in the rituals that set off the holiday shopping season. We missed the Thursday night lighting of the tree and buildings at the Country Club Plaza but went down there the next day to rub shoulders with the crowds enjoying the unseasonably warm weather and the shopping. The Plaza is modeled after Seville, Spain, and all of the buildings are outlined in holiday lights - more than 80 miles of them, according to their publicity.

We saw Santa's sleigh - on wheels - pull into Crown Center and the long line of eager children with their parents and grandparents at Crayola Christmas Land to make their yearly requests for goodies. In this cynical, sophisticated age, I was a little surprised at how old some of the children were. Is it possible they were just manipulating the system?
